National Numeracy Champions programme

Many people feel anxious about maths and hold such negative thoughts, beliefs, and feelings around the subject that this often holds them back from engaging with learning. We understand that having good numeracy skills is key to getting on in both work and life.

That is why we need Numeracy Champions – to help support people at work, at home or in the community to build confidence with numbers. Champions do not teach maths but act as mentors who can support others. They help adults, or children to develop positive attitudes towards numeracy, overcome their barriers and start their learning journey– they offer support and encouragement to others.

What is a Numeracy Champion?

Numeracy Champions do not teach maths! Instead, they support positive conversations with others about numbers. They:

  • Talk positively with others who may feel anxious about maths, and inspire them to share their experiences
  • Engage and support others to have a more positive approach towards numbers
  • Signpost others to take the first steps in improving their numeracy skills using National Numeracy’s online resources
  • Utilise the tools and resources from the programme.
